Objective: To determine the frequency of various possible risk factors in patients of restenosis.
Study Design: A descriptive study.
Place and Duration of study: The study was done in Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi from January 2005 to June 2005.
Patients and method: It comprised of thirty patients who had undergone Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) during last five years, and presented again with symptoms of angina and found to have restenosis on repeat coronary angiography. Both, initial PTCA and repeat coronary angiography were performed at Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology Rawalpindi. All patients were evaluated for the presence of risk factors like smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, dilated cardiomyopathy and gender with the help of written proforma.
Results: Results revealed that 20 (66.7%) were males. Fourteen (46.7%) were smoker. Twenty (66.7%) had a history of hypertension. Thirteen (43.3%) had a history of diabetes mellitus. 13 (43.3%) were found to have hyperlipidaemia. Dilated cardiomyopathy was found in 6 (20%) patients.
Conclusion: Restenosis occurs most of the times due to an under-dilated residual lesion and improper medical treatment after PTCA.
