Frequency of Postinsertion Traumatic Ulcerations and Adjustment Appointments in Complete Denture Patients

Objective: To determine the frequency of post-insertion traumatic ulcerations and adjustment appointments in complete denture patients.
Study Design: Prospective comparative study.
Place and Duration of Study: Combined Military Hospital Multan Institute of Medical Sciences Dental College Multan, Pakistan, from Feb 2024 to Aug 2025.
Methodology: A total of 149 edentulous patients (85 male and 64 female) were provided with new complete maxillary and mandibular dentures. Each patient was recalled for seven follow-up appointments: on Days 1, 2, and 3 post-insertion, and then at 2-day intervals up to Day 11. At each visit, adjustments related to discomfort, pressure areas, ulcerations, and occlusion were recorded for both arches. The association between gender and the need for adjustments at each visit was assessed.
Results: A progressive decline in adjustment needs was observed across visits, with 77.7% of patients requiring adjustments at the first follow-up, 43.9% at the third, and none at the seventh. Mandibular dentures required more frequent adjustments than maxillary dentures throughout the study period. There was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between males and females in the frequency of adjustments at any stage of follow-up.
Conclusion: Most post-insertion complaints occurred during the initial visits, particularly in the mandibular arch. Patient adaptation improved significantly by the seventh visit, indicating the importance of regular follow-ups in complete denture treatment.
